Have the Democrat party Big Wazoos finally figured out a way to grease the skids under Slow Joe Biden? It’s beginning to look like they have.
You remember Joe – he’s the guy the Democrat establishment threw at Bernie Sanders to knock him off what seemed to be hot rails to the party’s presidential nomination back in February. Before they discovered that he might not be the best bet in a live slugfest with president Trump: poor guy, there are days when he looks and sounds punchy before anyone lays a glove on him. But, having derailed The Bern, how does the guy who put away America’s best-known socialist get eased off the stage without too much shouting about how the game is fixed?
Sometimes the Deus ex Machina, the god-producing apparatus of Greek theatre which dropped a problem-solving deity on the stage just when everything looked hopeless, is an actual thing. In this case, her name is Tara Reade.
Ms. Reade, for those still living under rocks somewhere, is the ex-congressional staffer who has recently accused Joe Biden of what sounds an awfully lot like sexual battery. Sexual assault at the very least. Her accusation is problematic, because she remembers precise details and because there is a record of at least tangential contemporaneous corroboration by Ms. Reade’s mother and friends of some sort of naughtiness on part of the then-senator Biden. True, it happened 27 years ago when we were all quite different people. And we should maintain in mind the well-worn axiom that the former vice-president is “innocent until proven guilty.”
Unless, of course, we apply the Kavanaugh Standard.
You remember that: Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was accused of rape thirty years previously by one professor Christine Blasey Ford, which accusation became the sole point of focus in his Senate hearings. Professor Ford could remember no details, no place, no other potential witnesses and was without any corroboration contemporaneous with the alleged event, but in the words of the Democrat mob, “we believe her” because “women must be believed” and “men should just sit down and shut up.” Yep, those are all real quotes from the Lefties involved in trying to nail Brett Kavanaugh’s head to the wall. At the time, Joe Biden observed “For a woman to come forward in the glaring lights of focus, nationally, you’ve got to start off with the presumption that at least the essence of what she’s talking about is real, whether or not she forgets facts, whether or not it’s been made worse or better over time.” When asked in a CNN interview at the time, he added that he believed Anita Hill “from the beginning.”
Democrats demanded that Kavanaugh should withdraw from the process; that the FBI should be called in to investigate this grievous crime; that the nominee should be subjected to “struggle sessions,” re-education and the whole panoply of tools of the totalitarian Left. Biden was as prominent in these efforts as a man could be.
If the symmetry were any more perfect, I would burst into tears.
But there’s more to this than the entertainment value of watching the Society for the Prevention of (Republican) Vice and their brethren of the feminized Left writhe and gasp as they try to avoid applying to their present presumptive presidential nominee the standard with which they attempted to sink Brett Kavanaugh. Much more.
Sexual assault is a felony and many states have lifted the statute of limitations on these types of sexual crimes, Delaware included. So despite Joe’s protestations that he “remembers nothing of the alleged incident,” how many people are now whispering in his ear or shouting at him across his desk that for the good of the party – that is, so it will not be seen for the agglomeration of hypocrites that it is – he must withdraw? How many plans for rules “adjustments” and other impedimenta designed to trigger a brokered convention are now being drawn against the former Vice President, that he may be given the bum’s rush?
At the moment things seem to be looking up for St. Andrew the Earnest of New York. Having mismanaged and bankrupted one of the largest states of the Union for ten years, he may soon be chosen to contend for the opportunity to do the same to the Union at large. While the Democrat who received the most votes is cast on the ash-heap of history, to borrow a fitting phrase.
To quote our French friends, “Plus ça change, plus le même chose…”
